SEAPARC Moves Forward with Fitness Facility Expansion

Apr 11, 2019

Victoria, BC– The Sooke & Electoral Area Parks and Recreation Commission (SEAPARC) Leisure Complex is excited to move forward with their fitness expansion this spring.

“It has been a long road to get here and there have been some challenges but we are very excited to move ahead and start the project,” said SEAPARC Chair Al Beddows.

Through capital planning amendments and a deferred project timeline, SEAPARC re-allocated $600,000 of funding from existing capital budget to complete this project. The design phase of the SEAPARC Leisure Complex expansion was completed in 2018. The expansion will address the need for a fitness gym facility and additional multi-purpose space, as current space is at capacity.

In 2019, construction of the facility will enhance the diversity of programs and recreation opportunities the complex offers with its current ice arena (built in 1976), two pools, one multi-purpose room and a meeting room (built in 2000). Knight Contracting Ltd. has been awarded the construction contract.

The expansion will increase the 4,739 square metre (51,020 square foot) footprint of the complex by 10%, or approximately 478 square metres (5,150 square feet). The addition includes a 36 square metre (383 square foot) Child Minding Room, a 144 square metre (1,550 square foot) Movement Studio and Multi-Use Room and a 334 square metre (3,600 square foot) Fitness Gym.

This project was made possible with the assistance of a $1.24 million grant from the Strategic Priorities Federal Gas Tax Fund. The total project cost is $3.4 million.

The proposed site is on the west side of the facility, adjacent to the current multi-purpose rooms and board room. Project construction will start in April and is expected to be complete by January 2020.
