Public Input Sought on Wastewater Treatment Options

Jun 25, 2015

Victoria, BC – The Eastside and Westside Wastewater Treatment and Resource Recovery Select Committees (Eastside and Westside Select Committees) are encouraging the public to weigh in on potential wastewater treatment options. Option sets for both the Eastside and Westside Select Committees were presented to the public at an open house last night (June 24) where an estimated 400 people were in attendance.

“What we have presented are examples of what wastewater treatment and resource recovery options might look like,” said Westside Select Committee Co-Chair Barbara Desjardins. “This information will give the public a better idea of what is possible for single or multiple facility options. We are looking forward to hearing from the public about which sites and options they think work best within our communities.”

Members of the public can review the Westside Solutions wastewater treatment option sets at www.WestsideSolutions.ca.  The Eastside Select Committee option sets can be found at www.crd.bc.ca/Eastside

“We are asking the public to help us narrow the number of potential treatment options so that we can decide which sites and treatment options to put forward for a more detailed technical and costing analysis over the summer,” said Eastside Select Committee Chair Lisa Helps. “The final decision about which solution sets to put forward for further costing rest with elected officials,” said Helps. “And, as it has to date, public input will help to drive our decisions.”

Online feedback opportunities for the Eastside and Westside options have been launched:

In order to identify potential wastewater treatment options the Eastside and Westside Select Committees have each been working on two tracks, technical assessment and public engagement. The options that are being put forward for public consideration were developed by taking into account information that was gained through both of these processes.

“The eastside and westside are working together and are looking for a solution that works for the entire region,” said Westside Select Committee Co-Chair Carol Hamilton. “There are many ways that the eastside and westside option sets can be integrated together and after we take the detailed technical and costing information out to the public for review in the fall we will be better equipped to identify the best solution set combination.”

Throughout the summer months, both Westside Solutions and the Eastside Select Committee will continue to provide information to the public both online and at public events. For more information visit www.westsidesolutions.ca and www.crd.bc.ca/eastside.

The public will be asked to weigh in again in October once more detailed costing has been done on potential sites by independent engineers over the summer months.
