Capital Regional District Board Announces 2014 Chair

Dec 11, 2013

Victoria, BC – Robert Lapham, Chief Administrative Officer of the Capital Regional District (CRD), is pleased to announce the 2014 Board Chair, Vice Chair and Board of Directors.

District of Central Saanich Mayor Alastair Bryson has been re-elected as the 2014 CRD Board Chair. Bryson was first elected as CRD Board Chair in 2013. He was elected to Council in 2005, re-elected to Council in 2008 and elected as Mayor in 2011. He is a Regional Director on the Peninsula Recreation Commission, Saanich Peninsula Water Commission and Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Committee.

“As Chair of the CRD Board for 2014, I will continue to work towards the implementation of the strategic priorities identified by the Board in the 2012-2014  Strategic Plan.  There were a number of accomplishments in 2013 including: achieving the first year of carbon neutral operations under the BC Climate Action Charter, upgrades to the Regional Trail Network including completion of Phase 1 of the E&N Rail Trail, and progress on the Regional Kitchen Scraps Strategy. New initiatives include a significant project with Island Health to renew the senior residential housing supply replacing the Oak Bay Lodge and Mt. Tolmie residential care facilities, and the Seaterra program which will implement new sewage treatment and resource recovery infrastructure. Work is also underway to create a Regional Transportation plan and I look forward to continued progress in 2014 on Regional Cooperation, the Integration of Solid and Liquid Waste Management initiatives and regional coordination of emergency services.”

City of Langford Councillor Denise Blackwell has been re-elected as the 2014 CRD Vice Chair and Hospital District Board Chair. Blackwell has been a City of Langford Councillor since incorporation in 1992 and is currently the Chair of the Planning and Zoning and Affordable Housing Committee. She previously served as CRD Board Chair 2006 – 2008.

Representation on the CRD Board balances varying population bases with community interests. Each local government receives one vote for every 5000 population and receives one director for every 25,000 population.
