CRD Announces 2013 EcoStar Award Winners

Victoria, BC- Yesterday, the Capital Regional District (CRD) hosted the 2013 EcoStar Community Environmental Awards, which serve to celebrate environmental leaders across the region. As in previous years, winners have shown exemplary social, environmental and community initiative in creating and implementing green programs, practices and projects across the region.

The 2013 EcoStar Awards Ceremony honoured this year’s award recipients:

Waste Reduction: Monk Office (Award sponsored by reFUSE Resource Recovery)

Waste Reduction Non-Profit: Lansdowne Middle School (Award sponsored by reFUSE Resource Recovery)

Integrated Watershed Management: Reliable Controls (Award sponsored by Golder Associates)

Integrated Watershed Management Non-Profit: St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church (Award sponsored by Golder Associates)

Land Stewardship Non-Profit: Mayne Island Conservancy Society (Award sponsored by 98.5 The Ocean)

Climate Action: Big Wheel Burger (Award sponsored by BC Transit)

Climate Action Non-Profit: Island Pathways (Award sponsored by BC Transit)

Youth Leader: Emma Kinakin (Award sponsored by the Times Colonist)

Community Environmental Leader: Brett Soberg (Award sponsored by the Capital Regional District)

“The EcoStar Awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate green practices in the region, and educate residents on the importance of sustainable actions and making a positive change in the world,” said CRD Chair, Alastair Bryson.

The ceremony also honoured this year’s winners of the 2013 EcoTunes song writing contest - first place winners Somaya Said and Emma Attwell, and second place winner Adam Bay.

EcoTunes offers a chance for local, professional and amateur songwriters of all ages to celebrate the region’s landscapes and natural areas through music while supporting local arts and encouraging environmental awareness.

The 2013 EcoTunes contest is proudly supported by Larsen Music and 103.1 Jack FM.
