CRD and RCMP Join Forces to Keep Parks Safe and Enjoyable This Summer

May 15, 2012

Victoria, BC- The Capital Regional District (CRD), RCMP and municipal police are partnering again this summer to increase enforcement in regional parks. Officers will be patrolling popular parks to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.

“The Capital Regional District had a record 5.45 million visits to regional parks and trails in 2011,” said Janette Loveys, Park Operations Services Manager of CRD Regional Parks. “The majority of people are respectful of other park visitors and the natural areas. However, alcohol violations continue to account for most park infractions. Our goal is to decrease the overall number of serious incidents and public disturbances in regional parks.”

“Local RCMP detachments look forward to working alongside CRD Bylaw officers again this summer at popular regional parks. This type of patrol and enforcement has proven successful in creating a safe and pleasurable visit for park visitors,” said Cpl. Chris Swain of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP. “Be responsible, be safe, respect other users of the park and have fun!”

Patrols will be deployed on hot, sunny days in order to create a presence at beaches and swimming areas in Thetis Lake, Witty’s Lagoon, Sooke Potholes, Matheson Lake, and Mt. Work (Durrance Lake) regional parks. CRD reminds the public that alcohol and fires are prohibited in regional parks. From June 1 to September 15, dogs must be on leash when passing through designated beach and picnic areas and are not allowed to stay. As well, dogs must be on the trail and under control at all times.

We appreciate the public’s assistance in keeping parks safe and clean. If you see park violations please report it to CRD Regional Parks at 250.478.3344.
