Victoria, BC - The Island View Beach Regional Park campground in Central Saanich will open for the season on Victoria Day long weekend, May 21, until the Labour Day long weekend, Sept. 6.
Regional Parks has made improvements to the campground, including site cleanup, campground modification, re-naturalization of the foreshore to provide public access to the beach, and containment of an infestation of carpet burweed (Soliva sessilis), an invasive plant.
“The improved campground has been re-designed to provide a high quality camping experience,” said Christopher Causton, CRD Regional Parks Committee Chair. “As well, it connects to the day use areas of the park to complete it as one continuous area and ensure better protection of sensitive ecosystems.”
The campground has 18 beach front RV sites, five treed tent trailer sites and 24 treed tent sites and operates on a first-come first-served basis. All camping sites are self-contained. The fee is $15/night for tenting and $20/night for RVs, payable by cash only.
In September 2009, CRD Regional Parks purchased land adjacent to Island View Beach Regional Park to complete the park boundary. The parcel included the previously privately owned campground.
“Regional Parks will undertake a comprehensive planning review of the Island View Beach Management Plan, which will recommend long term use for the campground site,” said Causton. “This planning process will include the Cordova Shore Conservation Strategy, a business case, an assessment of the campground, a public consultation process and an invasive species management plan.”
Island View Beach Regional Park is a 67.73 hectare conservation area on the eastern shore of the Saanich Peninsula. It features a long sandy beach for exploring, picnicking and swimming. Visitors can also explore the intertidal zone, bird watch along the shore or in the fields, and enjoy the panoramic seascape views of Haro Strait, James Island and Mount Baker. A loop trail offers an easy and scenic walk. The RV and tent campground is located in the heart of the park.
