Come Out to the Hartland Happening Open House September 20

Sep 09, 2009

Victoria, BC - Have you ever wondered where your garbage goes after you put it out for pick-up? For the past three years Hartland Happening, the annual CRD Hartland Landfill open house—designed to familiarize people with how a landfill works and raise awareness about how waste is managed— has been helping to answer this question. This year’s Hartland Happening is being held on Sunday, September 20 from 10:30 am-3 pm, at 1 Hartland Avenue and is open to all members of the public; the landfill, however, will not be open to receive garbage or recyclables.

Hartland receives garbage from across the region, processing over 500 tonnes per day. “Superior processes and innovative waste management programs are what make Hartland an award winning multi-purpose facility,” said Tom Watkins, Operations Manager at the landfill.

Activities at the open house will include guided tours, a mini-machines giant sandbox, the opportunity to climb aboard monster machines like dump trucks, tractors and bulldozers, as well a barbeque held by the Lion’s Club. Donations of non-perishable food will be collected for the Mustard Seed.

To reduce the event’s greenhouse gas emissions a free shuttle service will be provided to and from the landfill. The shuttle will service Mayfair Mall, Saanich Commonwealth Place and Camosun College Interurban Campus before arriving at Hartland; service will include a guided tour, which will begin at Camosun Interurban. Shuttles will run every half hour from 10am – 3pm. For shuttle times and details, please see the attached schedule.

“The fourth annual Hartland Happening will offer an excellent opportunity to take a sustainable mode of travel to the landfill,” said CRD Chair of the CRD Environment Committee Alice Finall, “I am pleased to see such a popular event become even more environmentally friendly.”

The CRD wishes to thank its community supporters, A British Columbia, Black Press, Jack FM and The Ocean, as well as shuttle station supporters Mayfair Mail, Camosun Interurban and Commonwealth Place Recreation Centre.
