Panorama Recreation Centre’s Accessible Waterslide Receives Funding Assistance from McDonalds

Jul 09, 2009

Victoria, BC – The enjoyment of a waterslide ride by individuals with mobility challenges came closer to being a reality thanks to the support of the Sidney McDonalds. Funds raised from the recent McHappy Day were presented on July 9, 2009 to the Peninsula Recreation Commission by Grant Reid, Owner of the Sidney, Mt. Newton and Royal Oak McDonalds. The $736 contribution will be added to the current fund raising campaign to assist with the installation of an elevator in conjunction with the new slide at Panorama. “Being new to the community, we wanted to do something right off the bat to support a worthwhile local project,” said Reid. “We felt that the unique initiative by the Commission to make their new waterslide accessible was a perfect fit.”

Accepting the funds on behalf of the Commission, North Saanich Mayor and Commission member Alice Finall thanked Reid, saying “It is exciting to stand here in front of the pool’s new  elevator and think forward to the enjoyment that will now be afforded to patrons young and young at heart. They will now be able to share their stories of riding a waterslide rather than just listening the stories of others.”

Opening on October 24, 2009, the newly renovated and expanded aquatic complex at the Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich will feature the tallest (35.5’) and longest (330’) indoor waterslide on southern Vancouver Island. The waterslide will be the first in North America to include an elevator and transfer lifts so that patrons not able to negotiate the six flights of stairs to the slide platform will now be able to enjoy a slide ride with everyone else.

“The installation of an elevator, making the slide accessible, removes another barrier for individuals with varying mobility capabilities,” said Doug Nutting, Executive Director of Recreation Integration Victoria. “The Commission has been a leader in making their facilities as accessible as possible and we are pleased to see them taking this next step.”

Other fund raising initiatives for the elevator include the Carolwood Manor Summer Splash on July 26th featuring cuisine from the Canadian Culinary Federation (Victoria Branch) and entertainment by Dal Richards. Tickets are available at Panorama Recreation, 250.656.7271, and include a tax receipt and two entries into draw for the First Down the Slide Pool Party for 20 people.
