Waste Management in the Region

The management of unwanted materials is a shared responsibility and requires involvement from the entire community, including residents, businesses, institutions, First Nations, municipalities, and non-profits associations, as well as the local waste management industry. Each of the stakeholders involved in solid waste management have a unique role to play.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) owns and operates the only landfill in the region, Hartland Landfill. The CRD is also responsible for long-term planning of the management of municipal solid waste and recycling.

The 2021 Solid Waste Management Plan outlines the region's current long-term targets, goals and strategies to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. It will take participation from all individuals, businesses, and governments to reach our goals.

The 5Rs

Waste management in the region follows the 5R Pollution Prevention Hierarchy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recovery, and Residuals Management. The hierarchy is a series of steps to follow when managing waste.

Reduce as the top of the hierarchy is the best option, while residuals management is a last resort.
