Pizza Boxes

Pizza Boxes

Corrugated cardboard has been banned from the garbage since 1993. Residential pizza boxes can be recycled for free through the provincial Recycle BC program. In the Capital Region this is available through the curbside blue box recycling program as well as some drop off locations.

How do I go green?

Order one big pizza instead of several small ones. Resist delivery and go out for pizza or make one from scratch.

Use grease and food free pizza boxes in the garden as a sheet mulching layer or as a brown layer in your compost.

Clean properly prepared pizza boxes are accepted in the curbside blue box recycling program and for free at Recycle BC Depots found here. To prepare pizza boxes for recycling, empty them of all food waste, liners and inserts. Tear off the lids or turn the boxes inside out and place out with your cardboard.

Not all facilities listed below are part of the provincial program and may charge a fee for drop off. Contact facilities directly regarding size limits and charges.

  • The Environmental Story

Most types of cardboard can be recycled up to five times before wood fibers shorten and begin to disintegrate. Your old packing or pizza box can be put to good use many times before reaching the end of its lifespan. Using any cardboard, however, means the harvesting of trees, as new fibres must be blended with old ones for adequate strength.
