You can apply for a permit by submitting an application and the items attached on the building permit application checklist either in person to one of the four offices, through the mail, or by courier delivery.

Building permit fees for the proposed work are based on the greater value of either the construction value provided by the applicant, or the square footage value as per the bylaw.

How do I pay for a building permit?

You can pay for your building permit in person at one of the building inspection offices, through the mail or by courier delivery. We accept cash, cheque and in some offices we can accept debit payments.

How long does it take to get a permit?

The average processing time for building permits is up to eight weeks for the Malahat, Willis Point, Southern Gulf Islands areas, and up to 16 weeks for Juan de Fuca, provided all of the required documents have been submitted with the application. In cases where outside agency approval is required the processing time may take longer.

How long is my building permit good for?

A building permit expires at two years from the date of issue. In some cases the building inspector can extend the period of time up to a maximum of one year.

How do I book an inspection?

Please call one of our four building inspection offices to arrange for an inspection. We ask that you provide 24 hours notice when requesting an inspection and that you also provide us with the building permit number, address of the property being inspected and type of inspection required.
