Compact discs (CDs) and DVDs are small and easy to store when in your music or movie collection, but what to do once they’ve become unusable or unwanted?  What about those old floppy disks?

How do I go green?

Reduce

It’s now easy to purchase music and videos online using iTunes or other websites. This eliminates the need for CDs all together, which saves the world from stacks of plastic.

CDs you do have can be protected from damage by keeping them from direct sunlight exposure. Repair small scratches with a mild abrasive. Repair is always a better option than replacement.

Reuse

Sell or donate unwanted CDs to a music store, charity or library. Give them to friends, have a garage sale or make mobiles to scare the birds away from your garden!

Recycle

CDs, DVDs, floppy disks and audio and video tapes can be recycled through the newly expanded electronics recycling product stewardship program called Return-It Electronics.  To find out where to take them, go to Drop off locations.  To find out what else is accepted in the electronics recycling program, go to What's Accepted and scroll down.

Note: Not all of the facilities listed below are part of the Product Stewardship program.  If they are not they may charge a convenience fee.

Note:  CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks and the outer cases are not accepted in the curbside recycling program.

  • The Environmental Story

CDs and DVDs are made of polycarbonate, with a layer of precious metal, dye and sealant on one side to facilitate the recording process. Polycarbonate is a hard plastic also often used for eyewear lenses. A CD is made of number 7 plastic, but the additional layers make it one of those odd though ubiquitous items that can be challenging to recycle.  Fortunately they are now accepted in the Return-It Electronics program.
