Cords (extension and appliance)

Cords (extension and appliance)
Cords should not go out with the trash. Like drink yokes, cords and cabling can harm scavenging wildlife that get tangled up when in search of food.

The facilities below will accept intact appliance and extension cords for recycling. Copper wire can also be sold to scrap yards by the kilogram and will fetch a higher price when stripped.

To recycle computer specific cables and cords, see Electronics.

How do I go green?

Dispose and replace cords only when no longer functional. Extend the longevity of your appliances and lighting by loosely binding slack cord and ensuring no weight is placed on cords and cables.

A spare extension cord is always handy to have around. Keep them tidy by loosely wrapping the cord and then pulling it through an old paper towel or toilet paper roll.

Contact facilities directly regarding restrictions and charges.

  • The Environmental Story

Copper wire used in cords is typically made from newly refined copper; however, wire production makes up a small fraction of the copper needed for industrial purposes annually and over 75% of copper items produced are fashioned from post-consumer recycled copper that has been melted down from recycled scrap. The PVC and vinyl jackets used to insulate copper wire can in some areas be downcycled into new materials. Copper wire and aluminum insulation can be completely recycled without loss of integrity to the core material.
