Appliances (large or major)

Large appliances, otherwise known as white goods, are banned from garbage. They are accepted for recycling at a number of drop-off locations throughout the CRD (see below). You pay for this end-of-life service with an environmental handling fee (EHF) when you purchase new devices in the Major Appliance Recycling Roundtable (MARR) stewardship program.

Dishwashers - Call first as not all depots listed accept plastic dishwashers in addition to metal appliances. The Hartland depot accepts all types of dishwashers.

Microwaves - Facilities below accept the built-in, over-the-range type.  See Appliances (small) for countertop type.

How do I go green?

Donate appliances that still work to a charity, community group, school or church (keeping in mind that these groups can’t use items that need to be repaired) or offer it online through social media or an online classifieds service.  Consider repairing items whenever possible instead of purchasing new ones.

Not all of the facilities listed below are part of the product stewardship program.  If they are not, they may charge a convenience fee.  Contact facilities directly regarding restrictions and charges.

    Many large appliances contain refrigerants: a group of chemicals that collectively are called ozone depleting substances. By responsibly recycling your large appliances, you ensure that any ozone-depleting substances will be handled and disposed of carefully by licensed professionals. What’s more, the remaining scrap metal can be recycled and put back into the manufacturing supply chain.
