Saanich, Hartland Learning Centre
Event Information
Join us for a free composting workshop at the
Hartland Learning Centre followed by a tour of the region's landfill.
At the workshop you will learn the recipe for
compost success and why composting matters. An expert from the Compost
Education Centre will answer all your questions on how to produce an amendment
for your garden that is rich in beneficial microorganisms and nutrients, the
best composting system for your needs, and how to increase the rodent
resistance of your compost pile.
On the tour you will learn how the CRD safely
and responsibly manages the region's waste. We will discuss the 3Rs (reduce,
reuse and recycle), ways we can generate less waste and how our behaviours
affect Hartland Landfill and the region.
Tour highlights:
- Active Face: see where all your garbage goes and what we do with it at the active face.
- Landfill Gas: learn about landfill gas and how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into energy."
- Environmental Protection: see how we manage rainfall runoff to ensure we protect our environment.
- Site Rehabilitation: visit the closed section of the landfill where native trees and shrubs have been planted to help return the area into a natural eco-system.
Location: Meet at the Hartland Learning Centre – 1 Hartland Avenue
Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early to get orientated. Parking is available in the lot located to the right just before you enter the facility (Mt. Work mountain bike parking lot). Walk through the gate located behind the washrooms and make your way up the stairs to the Hartland Learning Centre.
The CRD continues to follow the advice of the Public Health Officer and other agencies. If you are not feeling well, stay home.
