Saanich, Hartland Learning Centre

Event Information

Want to see where your garbage goes?

What you put in the garbage matters and residents have a role to play in reducing the amount of waste that ends up at Hartland Landfill.

Join us for a presentation at the Hartland Learning Centre followed by a tour of the region's landfill. On the tour you will learn how the CRD safely and responsibly manages the region's garbage. We will discuss the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), ways we can generate less waste and how our behaviours affect Hartland Landfill and the region.

Tour highlights:

  • Active Face: see where all your garbage goes and what we do with it at the active face.
  • Landfill Gas: learn about landfill gas and how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into energy."
  • Environmental Protection: see how we manage rainfall runoff to ensure we protect our environment.
  • Site Rehabilitation: visit the closed section of the landfill where native trees and shrubs have been planted to help return the area into a natural eco-system.

School or community groups interested in booking a tour please contact us.
