Event Information
Does your family want to learn where your garbage goes?
Join us for a presentation and activity at the Hartland Learning Centre followed by a tour of the region's landfill. This family program uses a landfill watershed model to demonstrate where rainwater flows and how landfill engineering and personal habits help to protect people, pets, and the environment.
On the tour you will learn how the CRD safely and responsibly manages the region's garbage. We will discuss the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), ways we can generate less waste and how our behaviours affect Hartland Landfill and the region.
Tour highlights:
- Active Face - see where all your garbage goes and what we do with it at the active face.
- Landfill Gas - Learn about landfill gas and how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into electricity."
- Environmental Protection - See how we manage rainfall runoff to ensure we protect our environment.
- Site Rehabilitation - Visit the closed section of the landfill where native trees and shrubs have been planted to help return the area into a natural eco-system.
