1.363 Funding - Fire Protection - Saturna - SGI
The CRD annually provides funding towards the cost of fire protection and emergency response services provided by others on Saturna Island. The CRD raises funds through annual taxation and provides the funding to the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society.
In approximately 1979, a community group started providing fire protection and suppression services on Saturna Island. In 1993, the CRD Board was requested by the community to hold a referendum to establish a service to fund fire protection, suppression and emergency response services on Saturna Island. The referendum passed, and in November of that year the CRD Board adopted Bylaw No. 2165 called the Saturna Island Fire Protection and Emergency Response Local Service Contribution Establishment Bylaw No 1, 1993, which established a local service to contribute towards the costs incurred by the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society in providing the services. On January 14, 1994, the group providing fire protection and suppression services, incorporated as the Saturna Island Fire Protection Society. The service continues to be authorized and administered under CRD Bylaw No. 2165.
The Society provides the fire protection and emergency response service and receives annual funding from the CRD. The CRD Protective Services coordinates with the Society.
The Society submits to the CRD a provisional five year operating and capital budget which is established through an annual CRD Financial Planning process, and is funded by an annual property value tax levied in the local service area.
