RESOLVED: Sewage Spill Notice on Interurban Rail Trail in Saanich

Jun 05, 2021 (updated Jun 05, 2021, 1:05pm)

Crews have successfully cleaned the spill and the trail is fully re-opened.

In the late evening of June 4 a sewage spill occurred from the CRD’s Residuals Solids Pump Station #3. The impacted area was located along the Interurban Rail Trail (part of the District of Saanich’s Centennial Trail Network) between Interurban Avenue and Hartland Avenue across from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory.

This pump station is part of the Residual Solids Conveyance Line (RSCL) which conveys flows from McLoughlin Point Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Residuals Treatment Facility at Hartland Landfill. The sewage spill was the result of a failure of the pumping system. Crews determined the reasons for the failure and the system has been returned to normal operation.
