Collection of glass and foam packaging has been temporarily suspended

These recycling markets have been impacted by flooding and road closures in BC

Recycle BC, the organization responsible for residential paper and packaging recycling in the province, has directed all collectors in BC to temporarily suspend glass collection through curbside and depot collection programs effective November 22.

Depot collection of foam packaging (Styrofoam) has also been temporarily suspended.

Transportation, storage and processing options for these materials have been impacted by flooding and road closures across southern BC.  Recycle BC is asking all residents to store glass and foam packaging items at home until collection is reinstated.

Refundable glass beverage containers are not part of Recycle BC’s program and can still be returned to bottle depots and retailers across the region.

Glass materials will not be picked up through the Capital Regional District’s curbside recycling program until Recycle BC advises that collection can resume. Curbside collection for all other material streams (paper, cardboard, mixed containers) will continue unchanged for now.

Glass continues to be banned from household garbage and cannot be mixed with other recycling streams.
