3Rs Programs (Grades K-12)

Register your class for a workshop and/or tour of the Hartland Landfill and Public Drop-off Depot. These programs have promoted waste reduction and recycling education for more than a decade. They are one of many initiatives in place to reduce the amount of waste generated and disposed of in the capital region.

Location

Workshops at the Hartland Learning Centre are offered to pre-registered groups of between 15 and 35 people. They may be combined with a behind-the-scenes site tour of Hartland Landfill.

If you are unable to coordinate transportation to the learning centre, arrangements may be made for an in-school presentation.

Program Descriptions

That's Not Garbage! (Grades K-3)

Grade: K to 3 (curriculum links)
Duration: 45 minutes - 1 hour
Location: Hartland Learning Centre or in-class

Does that really belong in the garbage? Many things that end up in Hartland Landfill can actually be diverted.

This workshop teaches students about the 3Rs Hierarchy (reduce, reuse and recycle). Students begin to understand their role in the community and the broader world. We can all make a difference when it comes to what we throw away.

3Rs Unwrapped (Grades 4-5)

Grade: 4 and 5 (curriculum links)
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Hartland Learning Centre or in-class

This hands-on workshop educates students about the financial and environmental impacts of product packaging. Based on a real life scenario using a customized grocery store flyer, students work in small groups to develop a list of items that fit within an available budget and use the least amount of packaging. Students are challenged to think creatively, problem solve, and prioritize choices through the application of the 3Rs. Students report their findings back to the group. Shopping will never be the same for these students - or their families.

Digging Deeper (Grades 5-8)

Grade: 5-8 (curriculum links)
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Hartland Learning Centre or in-class

Looking for the deeper meaning or the bigger picture? Join us for an interactive workshop to link Earth Science to society, the environment and resource management.

Students will work cooperatively to analyse rocks and mineral kits. They will identify non-renewable resources in the everyday objects we throw away, discover our garbage has a history, and the role we play in the conservation of resources.

Custom Program (Grades 6-12)

Grade: 6-12
Duration: 1 hour
Location: Hartland Learning Centre or in-class presentation

Want a more in-depth look at waste management or engineered landfills? Looking for an interactive learning experience to complement your in-class discussions surrounding sustainability and environmental stewardship?

We'll work with you to create a program suited to your teaching plan through this custom option.

Hartland Landfill Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Grade: K-12
Duration: 1-1.5 hours
Location:  Hartland Learning Centre

Tour Hartland Landfill and Public Drop-Off Depot to learn how the CRD manages the region's waste. Participants will learn why it's important to reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in the landfill, and how to help by using the 3Rs at home and in school.

There's a lot to explore:

  • See where all your garbage goes and what we do with it at the active face.
  • Learn about landfill gas and how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into energy."
  • Visit the closed section of the landfill where native plants help restore the area into a natural ecosystem.
  • Learn how we're helping to protect the environment.

Tour content varies depending on the grade and interest of participants. Tours can be booked alone or in combination with a program in the Hartland Learning Centre.
