As the local government for the Salt Spring Island, Southern Gulf Islands and Juan de Fuca electoral areas, the CRD advances committee and commission-directed projects and provides data and recommendations from the CRD Regional Information Service.
The CRD supports electoral areas by administering two electoral area commissions, undertaking data analysis and research projects, investing in major strategic projects, providing services that contribute to the health, safety and quality of life for regional residents, and managing a stable financial and fiscal environment.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) has acquired the property at 280 Georgeson Bay Road on Galiano Island for the proposed Thuthiqut Hulelum’ Housing Project ("Forest Homes" in the Hul'q'umi'num' language). The $672,000 purchase is a move to advance a 20-unit rental housing complex aimed at enhancing the Islands affordable living options.

Following a community-led fundraising effort throughout 2022, the Capital Regional District (CRD) has acquired a 75-acre parcel of land on the northeastern slopes of Mount Maxwell to develop a community park. The acquisition effort involved local Indigenous community members, naturalists, recreational users, and other islanders.
