Gorge Waterway

Gorge Waterway

The body of water known simply as “The Gorge” to Victoria locals is a narrow inlet that connects Victoria Harbour to Portage Inlet. The Gorge Waterway is defined as the inlet between Craigflower bridge and Selkirk bridge. The Gorge has a rich history as an important spiritual place and fishing area for First Nations, and a fishing, bathing and recreational area for early Victoria residents. Recreational boating is still practiced on the Gorge today, and most of the shorelines border residential properties. Pollution has sullied the waters of the Gorge, but efforts have recently been made to clean up the area. This is important for the health of valuable fish and wildlife habitat that still exists in the Gorge, as well as for aesthetic and recreational values.
