Drinking Water Regulations
Provincial & Federal Regulations
CRD Water Services must comply with the BC Drinking Water Protection Act and the BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation, as do all of the municipal water suppliers in the Greater Victoria Drinking Water System. However, this regulation covers only the total and fecal coliform bacterial indicators. Therefore, while CRD Water Services is not legally required to comply with all of the water quality parameters in the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, the limits in the Guidelines are used almost as compulsory criteria that must be met if possible.
- BC Drinking Water Protection Act (2001)
- BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation (2003)
- Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality (2010)
USEPA Regulations
In addition to the regulations listed above, where appropriate, CRD Water Services also complies with many of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) rules and regulations on a voluntary basis. Some of the limits in the USEPA rules provide the basis for water quality goals for CRD Water Services.
World Health Organization Regulations
The Province of British Columbia uses the World Health Organization limits as general reference — mostly when there is no Canadian Guideline.
