Landfill & Recycling Tours

Hartland Landfill, aerial photoTake a tour of Hartland Landfill & Recycling! Learn how the CRD safely and responsibly manages the region's garbage and how waste diversion programs on-site help reduce the amount of garbage ending up in the landfill.

Tour Features

There's a lot to explore at Hartland Landfill & Recycling.

Active Face

See where all your garbage goes and what we do with it!

Learn about the science of landfill gas, how we're reducing greenhouse gas emissions and turning "garbage into electricity".

Rehabilitation Site

Visit the closed section of the landfill where native trees and shrubs have been planted to help return the area into a natural eco-system.

Find out what can be dropped off for reuse and recycling at Hartland. By practicing the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, Recycling - you reduce the amount of garbage that enters the landfill.

See how we're helping to protect the environment by accepting all types of household hazardous waste.

See where yard waste, such as leaves, branches and stumps, can be dropped off at Hartland for chipping, instead of taking up valuable space in the landfill.

Public Tours

Site tours are available for individuals or groups, upon request. Tours are also provided during the annual Hartland Open House. Contact the CRD Hotline for Open House dates or to book a tour.

School Tours

The CRD 3R School Outreach program offers tours of Hartland Landfill & Recycling for students Grades 3-12. Tour content varies depending on the grade. Schools are responsible for transportation to and from the site, as well as during the tour.

Schools can book any time, but many like to schedule tours to coincide with either:

Earth Week in April or
Waste Reduction Week in October

The CRD 3R School Outreach program motivates and challenges students and teachers to explore new attitudes and habits that generate less waste and reduce, reuse and recycle more! Let’s work together to make a positive impact on today’s youth – and the environment.

For information on other 3R student and teacher workshops, please see the CRD 3R School Outreach Program.
