Kitchen Scraps - Packaged Food Waste
In January 2015, a landfill ban on kitchen scraps (food waste and soiled paper products) was implemented. Kitchen scraps collection is conducted by a combination of municipal programs and private subscription services.

Food waste, regardless of its packaging, should not be disposed of as general refuse. The food content can be composted and the packaging can be recycled where possible.

How do I go green?

The easiest and quickest place to cut costs in any food service operation is at the garbage bin. Food wastage represents inefficiency. By wasting food, you are also wasting the resources that went into growing it. Decrease the amount of food wasted and pay less to dispose of unused products. Reduce costs by purchasing only the food that will be used or by decreasing improperly prepared foods.

Packaged food that is no longer able to be sold can be deconstructed and repurposed. Farmers may be interested in taking the food waste and then the packaging materials could be used for crafts and storage.

Contact facilities directly regarding services offered (destruction, de-packaging, collection vs. receiving), restrictions and charges.
