Winners of the Sixth Annual EcoStar Awards announced

Victoria, BC – Chair of the CRD Board, Denise Blackwell is pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 EcoStar Awards.

At last night’s awards ceremony held at the Empress Hotel, local individuals and organizations were honoured for their commitment and contributions to our environment. Ten winners were selected in a variety of categories:

  • Lifetime Achievement: Roger Colwill (in memoriam)
  • Climate Change: City Green Solutions
  • Conservation & Restoration: Pacific Family Centre Services Association
  • Corporate Social Responsibility: Hemlock Printers
  • Environmental Education: Today’s Stewards for Tomorrow & Victoria West Elementary School
  • Pollution Prevention: UVic Occupational Health, Safety & Environment
  • Transportation: Columbia Fuels
  • Waste Reduction: Fotoprint
  • Watershed Protection: Bob Bridgeman
  • Youth Achievement: McTavish Elementary School Green Team

In addition, this year an honourary award was presented to the Regional Water Supply Commission for their visionary purchase of the Leech River Watershed, which will protect almost 10,000 hectares of wilderness and secure the region’s access to clean water well into the next century.

The EcoStar Awards were established in 2000 to recognize individuals, organizations, groups and businesses that make outstanding contributions to the protection and preservation of the environment. Nominations for the awards are received through a public nominations process and each award category has its own judging panel. This year a record number of nominations were submitted.
