Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission Candidate Information Session

Mar 23, 2023

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) invites eligible electors of Salt Spring Island to participate in the 2023 Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission Election, scheduled for Saturday, May 27, 2023.

Voters will choose four Local Community Commissioners who will join Gary Holman, Salt Spring Island Electoral Area Director, to form the Local Community Commission (LCC). The LCC was established following a referendum in October 2022 that endorsed the creation of a regional district commission with delegated authority over specified local services and comprised of elected, rather than appointed, membership. The purpose is to broaden elected oversight and administration of certain Salt Spring Island local services, to ensure decision-making regarding these services is more locally transparent and reflective of the broader public interest.

“I initiated the LCC proposal so that Salt Spring Island can have more diverse, locally elected CRD representation and am very appreciative of the CRD Board and staff support for this initiative. I encourage anyone who cares about our community and wants to have a say in how our local services are delivered to consider running for the LCC,” said Director Gary Holman, “This is a historic opportunity for Salt Spring Islanders to have more local decision-making power and to ensure CRD decisions can be more reflective of the broader public interest on Salt Spring Island."

To help interested candidates learn more about the LCC and the nomination process, the CRD will host a virtual Candidate Information Session on Thursday, March 30 at 1:00 pm. The session will provide an overview of the LCC's roles and responsibilities, remuneration, time commitment, and other details. To register for the Candidate Information Session email elections@crd.bc.ca.

Candidates must be Canadian citizens aged 18 or older on general voting day (May 27, 2023) and residents of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before filing nomination documents. The nomination period begins on Tuesday, April 11 at 9:00 am and ends on Friday, April 21 at 4:00 pm.
