The CRD and CRHC 2021 Annual Reports released

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) released its 2021 annual report today, providing an overview how the CRD is supporting and responding to community needs and highlighting the progress made on strategic priorities to support a growing region.

"2021 demonstrated how resilient we are as a region. Working together we faced a record heatwave, floods and continued supporting one another through the COVID-19 pandemic,” said CRD Board Chair Colin Plant. “Through all this the CRD worked to adapt to meet the needs of our changing region, continued delivering the vital services we provide, and made significant progress on Board priorities.”

The report highlights the breadth and scope of the work the CRD does on a daily basis to contribute to the health and wellbeing of residents such as maintaining the availability of safe and clean drinking water, treating wastewater, managing solid waste, providing housing, responding to climate change and by managing regional parks and trails.

In 2021, the CRD focused on responding the significant growth across the region, investing in infrastructure and increasing the scale and scope of our operations to keep pace with the growth of the population and support the $2B in development that took place last year.

The CRD prepares a number of supporting reports that provide more details on how regional, sub-regional and local strategies are being advanced and meet requirements for regulatory compliance.

 The 2021 CRD Climate Action annual report summarizes progress on the CRD’s corporate and community-focused climate action strategies.

The CRD Environmental Resource Management progress report outlines the advancements made towards its mission is to efficiently and effectively manage the region’s solid waste resources in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible manner.

The CRD Board also held their final annual check-in on strategic priorities identified in the 2019-2022 Corporate Plan, reviewing what has been accomplished during this CRD Board term.  Over 95% of the initiatives listed in the corporate plan are either progressing, complete or operationalized.  

The CRD Board Priorities confirm the CRD’s vision, mission and mandate and set the long-term strategic direction for the CRD in order to respond to community needs. The priorities are:

  • Community Wellbeing: Transportation & Housing
  • Climate Action & Environmental Stewardship
  • First Nations Reconciliation
  • Advocacy, Governance & Accountability

“We have entered our last year in this term as Board and this review provides us with an opportunity to reflect on what we have accomplished in the last three and a half years,” said Chair Colin Plant. “While there is much more that needs to be done, I’m proud of the work we have done to move these priorities forward with accomplishments ranging from a new Climate Action Strategy, steps taken to develop relationships with First Nations that are based on mutual respect and advancement, completing the Wastewater Treatment Project, and advancing a more integrated and climate-friendly regional transportation system.” 

The CRD will continue to deliver on initiatives and actions which reflect these priorities. In 2023, the next CRD Board will complete its strategic planning process and identify the priorities which will set the direction for CRD in the next four years.

The Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC) Board also approved the CRHC’s 2021 Annual Report which outlines the work done in the last year to achieve the commitment to improve and expand housing opportunities. The CRHC is the largest non-profit housing provider on Vancouver Island and currently provides homes to more than 3500 tenants with 1893 units in 50 buildings across the capital region. Major accomplishments in 2021 include the completion and opening of Hockley House in Langford, and the ground breaking of two additional buildings: 2782 Spencer in Langford and Prosser Road in Central Saanich.
