ELSI has worked with a variety of community partners to install interpretive signs at the lagoon. These signs help educate visitors about a variety of significant aspects of the human and natural history of this unique area. Some of the topics covered:
- Migratory Bird Sanctuary status of the lagoon and surrounding areas, and the variety of migratory and resident shore birds, waterfowl, raptors and other birds that use the lagoon
- Sensitive dune ecosystems
- Estuary, eelgrass and other habitats within the lagoon
- The large watershed area that drains to the lagoon (1850 ha)
ELSI worked with partners in the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations to create a carved mural by Songhees artist Butch Dick and a painting depicting the ancient and continuing relationship of the Esquimalt People to this special place.
