The GWI reviews and submits coordinated responses to municipalities that border the Gorge (View Royal, Saanich, Victoria, Esquimalt) on topics such as Official Community Plan reviews, new bridge construction (Admirals Bridge, Craigflower Bridge), development applications along the waterfront or in riparian areas, anchored boats in the Gorge, sewer pump station upgrade project in Portage Inlet and related subjects as they come up. Since the GWI represents a wide range of stakeholders all concerned with environmental and conservation issues along the waterway and in its watersheds, the GWI is regularly consulted by local governments for input regarding issues that affect these ecosystems. For example, due to concerns raised by the GWI about bird strikes on utility lines crossing the Gorge, BC Hydro placed bird diverters on the power lines beside the Gorge Bridge, and when the Craigflower Bridge was rebuilt in 2014 the utility lines were placed beneath the bridge deck.
