Untitled
by Mungo Martin
Description
World's tallest free-standing totem pole and world's fourth tallest. Restored in 2002.
Artwork Statement
Kwakiutl tribal chief Mungo Martin, his son David, and Henry Hunt carved the totem from a 133-foot cedar from Sooke. In 2000, the pole was taken down as the wood had rotted and deteriorated. Many volunteers and experts in wood restoration restored the totem pole and it was re-installed on Oct. 29, 2001. On Nov. 3, 2001, the pole was unveiled and dedicated once again.
