The Mother Bear Project was an initiative that created the three carved Pender Women’s Unity Poles installed across the entrance to the Pender Island Community Hall.
The Jacqueline Rose log depicts a bear (pole on the right); The Winifred Alice log depicts a mother bear holding her cub (pole in the centre). The Elizabeth Grimmer log is the Grandmother bear (pole on the left).
Honouring our Women Ancestors. Through this project we hoped to create a lasting legacy, which would pay tribute to the women who come before us, giving us life, inspiration, encouragement and talents. The group was a glorious mixture of women and girls from all spiritual, educational, political and social backgrounds. We operated on two principles: Everyone is welcome and there is no such thing as a mistake.
