The medallion design relates both to the specific, historical conditions of the area and to a universal level of experience by viewers regardless of age, socio-economic or cultural background.

The design references life in the 1950s, a period that remains well within living memory but for which few physical traces remain. Molly's Original Cake Shop affords an economical and still-stylish emblem, hauntingly familiar and strangely otherworldly.

Robert Wise is a sculptor and designer who has lived in Vicoria his whole life. He has exhibited his sculpture throughout Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, and has completed two large public commissions in Victoria. For over 25 years he has designed and crafted modernist lighting fixtures and furniture in a variety of media, including stained glass, cast bronze, aluminum, stone and wood.

Christian Giroux is an artist, writer, and curator. He taught in the Visual Art Department at the University of Victoria and is now a professor in the School of Fine Art and Music at the University of Guelph.
