Five ceremonial shovels decorated by Galiano artists hang at the entrance of the Galiano library.
In the afternoon of Sunday, September 16th there was a special "Turning of the Sod" for Galiano's new Library. The shovels were used to break ground at the construction site next to the Galiano Community School. There was a blessing of the ground by Penalakut First Nation Elder Florence James involving the placement of eagle feathers and then speeches by Galiano Library Society Chair Pearl Roberts, CRD Director Dave Howe, Galiano Student Myrthe and Galiano School Trustee Bonnie McGillivray.
This video also documents the actual Turning of the Sod Ceremony with the five dignitaries using these especially hand-painted shovels.
