This metal tree is adorned with a metal ribbon hanging in the branches and an engraved poem (by Victoria's first Poet Laureate, Carla Funk) running along the ribbons. The poem is entitled "Hide and Seek". The tree has 275 -300 forged, metal leaves connected to the various branches.
This tree reflects Victoria's beautiful trees, integrating that I wanted to create something that more nature into the urban setting. The organic form looks as if it has grown in place and become part of the pole and the poem is displayed on soft flowing banners as if gently placed in the branches.
Inspiration came from lines in Carla Funk’s poem "from the gutter" and "point out stars"; the piece must starts at ground level and reach towards the sky.The poem's title "Hide & Seek" also played a part in the design; an old English penny from a local Fort Street coin dealer is hidden in the base of the trunk.
