Description

Glass Half Full consists of two playful sculptures that take the form of a straw resting in a glass of water, referencing the notion of a positive outlook on life based on one’s point of view. The scale appeals to a child-like fascination with objects larger than life; in the same way that the adjacent Harrison Yacht Pond appeals to a fascination with objects in miniature.

Both sculptures are designed for children to play and spin upon. 

Also located on this site, is an original poem by City of Victoria Poet Laureate Linda Rogers dedicated to this artwork. 

 

Artwork Statement
Glass Half Full uses a simple glass of water with a straw as an instantly familiar image with a variety of connotations, suggestive of sustenance, domesticity, and the notion of a positive outlook on life based on one’s point of view.  The seemingly bent straw in a glass of water is a visual distortion and a childhood fascination. The scale appeals to a child-like fascination with objects larger than life; in the same way that the adjacent Harrison Yacht Pond appeals to a fascination with objects in miniature.  I was interested in creating a form that was suggestive of the everyday, while also fantastical and dynamic.

Biography

Tyler Hodgins has exhibited in Victoria, Vancouver, and Calgary and has work in public and private collections in Canada and the US.

Tyler's work is primarily sculptural and includes video, photography, installation, and public art. Studio-based projects focus on themes of home, language, repetition/reproduction, and chance. He lives in Victoria with his wife and three children.
