One of five outdoor artworks mounted on the fence of Royal Athletic Park as part of the park's revitalization.
Human energy fascinates me. I paint the figure to explore the emotional, spiritual and physical ways that people experience imprisonment and liberation. Sport and modern dance are excellent vehicles for my work because they highlight the beauty of the human form and convey a range of emotion through movement.
For the mural project I was interested in showing the glory of sport, particularly from the female point of view. I did the painting in four five-foot squares to accommodate the size of my studio. From an initial drawing I used a grid to transfer the composition to the prepared panels. To emphasize the importance of sport I used some of the techniques of the old masters: strong diagonals in composition, rich colours, and deep contrasts in light and dark. While I focused on one female player, I suggested the game by hinting at other "team" players in the foreground and background.
