This mural was a collaboration between myself and the Chinese Public School. Students who attend the Chinese Public School made up the Junior Lion Dance Troupe and perform the Dragon Dance. In 2008 they won first place in the North American Chinese Folk Dance competition in Vancouver. I felt it was fitting to allow them to paint their vision of their proud community achievement. Rather than paint a photographic image of the dance, we painted it in collaboration. I outlined and cut out the panels of the dragon’s head and body in advance for the children to paint at the school. They spent some days with me in the last week of their school year, painting the first coat on the dragon (front, back and sides) then, with the help of their teacher and principal Kileasa Wong, I harmonized the overall design of the whole image.

Born 1950 in Belleville, Ontario.

Robert Amos graduated from York University in Toronto before pursuing a full time career in the arts. He lived in Brampton, Manitoba where he was part of a three person team making a large relief mural for Brampton City Hall. Amos arrived in Victoria is 1975 where he was Assistant to the Director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Since 1979 he has held numerous art shows and exhibitions in Victoria and overseas. He is also the art writer for the Victoria Times Colonist newspaper, which has published his weekly column on art since 1986.
