What's New with Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation

The provincial government has announced their Restart Plan for BC. Recreation centre staff are working diligently to revise our programs and services to follow provincial health guidelines. Your health and safety will always be a priority. Stay tuned for more information.

Summer Camps and Programs

PARC is excited to offer Summer Camps and Programs that follow provincial health guidelines. The camps are available for registration on June 3 online or over the phone. PARC is working extremely hard to ensure that all camps and programs are outdoor and compliant with social distancing guidelines and health policies. See our Summer offering and new guidelines.

Facility Update

Effective May 14, outdoor tennis courts, multi-sport courts, bike park, and skate park will reopen on Salt Spring Island.

Signage will be posted reminding users to observe health and safety precautions and follow best practices for physical distancing. These measures will help to ensure a safe outdoor recreation space for all. Users are expected to continue to adhere to public health guidelines and include:

  • Do not use the tennis/basketball courts or bike/skate park if you are unwell
  • Stay home if you have traveled in the past 14 days or if someone in your household is sick
  • Patrons are encouraged to bring their own hand sanitizer to use prior to play and after touching shared surfaces
  • Do not share equipment
  • Keep a 2 metre distance at all times

Additions specifically for tennis courts:

  • Queue outside the courts and maintain 2 metres distance when courts are in use
  • Limit play to singles, or doubles play with partners from the same household
  • Clearly mark your ball and refrain from picking up others' tennis balls
  • Casual play only; no lessons

Please note that outdoor tennis courts may be booked online or over the phone for priority use. Drop-in use is available at no cost, but users may be “bumped” if the court has been booked.

Facility Closure

To support community health and prevent the spread of COVID-19, The Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) directed staff to close the recreation facility March 17th. All PARC Recreation programs and services have ceased until further notice.

Programs scheduled during the closure have been cancelled and a prorated credit will automatically be applied to your account.

All membership passes will be extended for the duration of the closure. Monthly payment plans will be temporarily suspended.

We recognize many families and individuals rely on our recreation programs and services, and we ask for your patience while we continue to determine our next steps as more information is made available.

Centennial Park Playground Replacement

Planning has now begun to replace the playground at Centennial Park. The Salt Spring Island Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC) has adopted a 20 year Master Plan to prioritize infrastructure investments for Centennial Park. With site assessments and central drainage complete planning can begin to replace the playground. This much needed replacement project was made possible thanks in part to a $100,000 donation from the Salt Spring Island Lions Club.
