You already pay an environmental fee on items such as UPS/SLA batteries, so you can often return them to the place where you bought them, such as London Drugs, Canadian Tire and Interstate Batteries, free of charge for recycling (with the receipt).
UPS batteries are part of the Return-It Electronics
recycling product stewardship program, so you can take them to any of the electronics drop off locations
SLA batteries are not part of the electronics program, however Call2Recycle
, the battery and cell phone recycling program will take the small sealed lead acid batteries. Go to Call2Recycle Depot Locator
to find the nearest drop off location to you.
Car Batteries (large lead acid batteries) are a different program from Return-It Electronics and Call2Recycle. Go to Batteries (automotive)
for more details and to Lead Acid Battery Recyclers
to find a drop off location for car batteries.
Batteries, being hazardouse waste, are banned from the landfill.
