Plastic Milk Jugs

Plastic Milk Jugs
Residential plastic milk jugs can be recycled for free through the provincial Recycle BC program. In the Capital Region this is available through the curbside blue box recycling program as well as some drop off locations.

How do I go green?

Switch to a glass bottle dairy, where your empty bottles will be reused at least a dozen times before re-entering the recycling cycle. Limit purchases of smaller containers of milk in favour of using reusable containers filled from your large at-home jug.

Milk jugs can be used for a variety of house and garden DIY purposes: remove the spout and you have a handy bucket or water baler with a built-in handle; fill with sand and use to hold down a tarp or furniture that might be blown in the wind; fill with water and place in the freezer to make blocks of ice.

Residential plastic milk jugs are accepted in the curbside blue box recycling program and for free at Recycle BC Depots found here. Rinse, remove the caps and flatten if possible.

  • The Environmental Story

Most plastic beverage containers are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) or No. 2 Plastic - water is #1 plastic (PETE) - which like other plastics can only be downcycled and in some form or another, may end up filling up our landfills and waterways.
