How do I go green?

Refrain from replacing older windows, and keep the cold out and heat in by properly weather stripping around the window and installing heavy curtains and/or shutters.

A timber framed multi-pane or sash and case glass window makes an interesting design element when mounted on the wall or on an exterior garden wall.

If your window has some aesthetic appeal, an antiques or second hand consignment store may be willing to take it off your hands, and you might even fetch a nice price! Habitat for Humanity will accept window donations for the ReStore; check the website or call ahead to make sure they are accepting the kind of window you have.

Like glass containers, glass windows will take nearly an eternity to biodegrade in a landfill. Glass windows are not accepted through curbside recycling programs, but there are still some green options for the Capital Region resident.
