What would you like to Recycle?

Copper

Copper
The average family home contains over 400 pounds of copper, which is used for plumbing, in appliances and various building fittings. This amount does not include the copper used as an alloy in jewellery, bells and household accoutrements. Thin strands of copper are present in most household appliances to conduct the electricity that keeps these essential items running.

How do I go green?

Reduce

Keep electronic and household appliance purchases to a minimum. Extend the longevity of your appliances and lighting by loosely binding slack cord and ensuring no weight is placed on cords and cables.

Reuse

Polish old copper pipe tubing and reassemble it using copper fittings into racking for hanging pots and pans. Save old door knobs and locksets for future renovation projects.

Recycle

Copper wire can be recycled at a metal recycling depot without the insulation being stripped off. It can also be sold to scrap yards by the kilogram and will fetch a higher price when stripped. The facilities below will accept both insulated or stripped copper wire and other copper materials for recycling.

  • The Environmental Story

An increase in demand over the last twenty years has pushed copper prices up and encouraged greater moves to reuse and recycle.  Of all the copper ever mined, an estimated 80% is still in use today and aside from newly refined copper used to produce wire, foundries and other copper industries use up to 75% recycled copper in their manufacturing processes.  Copper is completely recyclable when found in its raw state or from post-consumer products and it is the third most recycled metal after iron and aluminum.
