How do I go green?

Choose products sold in aluminum foil pans instead of plastic as recycling options for aluminum are easier on the environment and longer lasting than those for plastic. An old pie plate or piece of foil is made into a new plate, over and over, unlike plastic, which is usually remade into a lower quality plastic.

Wash and reuse aluminum foil and foil baking pans; use plates as paint trays, to hold hardware or crafts or to make children’s art projects.

Clean residential aluminum foil and plates are accepted in the curbside blue box recycling program and for free at Recycle BC Depots found here.

  • The Environmental Story

Aluminum is made from strip mined bauxite ore, using sodium hydroxide and extremely high temperatures. The highest reserves of bauxite are found in Guinea, Australia, Vietnam and Jamaica, but the supply is not endless and aluminum is one of the most difficult metals to refine. Because of the amount of energy needed to create new aluminum, as well as the acidification problems associated with its production, recycling aluminum is far easier on the environment.

    Did You Know?

Aluminum is completely, endlessly recyclable. One pound of aluminum makes approximately 30 cans; using recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than mining new bauxite ore for new aluminum. It’s one packaging product you can feel good about using, and reusing.
