• The Esquimalt Anglers Association is active in coho enhancement on Craigflower Creek and operates a smolt trap and counting fence.
  • The Victoria Fish and Game Protective Association maintains a fish counting fence on the Colquitz River. During the fall salmon run, school groups frequently visit the counting fence and learn about salmon stewardship and conservation in the region.
  • The Portage Inlet Sanctuary Colquitz Estuary Society was organized "to promote and foster the preservation of Portage Inlet as a Federal Bird Sanctuary; to assist in and further the protection of Portage Inlet, the Gorge Waterway, Colquitz Estuary, and Cuthbert Holmes Park from physical, social, ecological and environmental harm".
  • The Portage Inlet Protection Society was formed "to maintain and enhance Portage Inlet/Gorge Waterway and its watersheds, to provide a healthy environment for human and other natural communities in perpetuity while protecting private property rights of those who live by its shores."
  • The Gorge Waterway Initiative, formed in 2005, is a collaborative, community-driven group of organizations concerned with protecting and enhancing the natural and cultural features of the Gorge Waterway, Portage Inlet and the surrounding watersheds. Members include conservation groups, community associations, local residents and municipal representatives who work together on a variety of stewardship and outreach initiatives concerning Portage Inlet and the Gorge Waterway.
  • The Victoria and Esquimalt Harbours Environmental Action Program is an intergovernmental initiative working to protect and improve the environmental quality of the harbour areas.
