Victoria, BC- The Capital Regional District (CRD) is pleased to announce the final results for the CRD local elections, which identify the following 2023 – 2026 CRD Board members for Salt Spring Island, the Southern Gulf Islands, and Juan de Fuca electoral areas:
- Gary Holman was re-elected as Electoral Area Director for Salt Spring Island
- Paul Brent was elected as Electoral Area Director for the Southern Gulf Islands
- Al Wickheim was elected as Electoral Area Director for Juan de Fuca
Voter turnout statistics for the EA Director races (includes resident and non-resident):
- Salt Spring Island: 39.31% (3,947 out of 10,041 registered electors)
- Southern Gulf Islands: 50.63% (3,104 out of 6,131 registered electors)
- Juan de Fuca: 19.16% (1,144 out of 5,972 registered electors)
Along with electing the local area directors, voters were also asked to respond to two referenda questions:
Question for Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission (LCC) Referendum – passed with a vote of 2,297 yes to 1,448 no:
"Are you in favour of the Capital Regional District (CRD) Board adopting Bylaw No. 4507, "Salt Spring Island Local Community Commission Establishment Bylaw No. 1, 2022", authorizing the establishment of a local community commission for the Salt Spring Island Electoral Area, to be comprised of four elected commissioners and the Electoral Area Director, to oversee and advise on economic development, wastewater disposal, community parks and recreation, small craft harbour facilities, transit and transportation, street lighting, grants-in-aid, compensation for livestock injured by dogs, and the contribution services for arts, public library, and search and rescue?”
Bylaw No. 4507 may now be adopted by the CRD Board, and an election for the four public members of the LCC may be held in 2023 in accordance with the Local Government Act.
Question for Southern Gulf Islands Transportation Referendum – failed with a vote of 1,495 yes to 1,498 no:
"Are you in favour of the Capital Regional District (CRD) Board adopting Bylaw No. 4484, "Southern Gulf Islands Transportation Service Establishing Bylaw No. 1, 2022," authorizing the CRD to establish an integrated transportation service for the Southern Gulf Islands Electoral Area to raise a maximum annual requisition up to the greater of SIX HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($675,000) or $0.1414 per ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($1,000.00) of taxable land and improvements for the purpose of funding the operating costs of the service?
As part of the official determination of results, the CRD confirmed and verified the accuracy of all ballot accounts, confirmed the calculation of vote tallies from the electronic tabulators and ensured the correct consolidation of total results from across all polling locations.
