Vergo Affordable Housing Achieves LEED Canada Certification

Aug 24, 2016

Victoria, BC– The Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC) announced today they have achieved Platinum Level LEED Canada certification for their Vergo townhouses located at 3808 Carey Road in Saanich. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, with LEED Platinum buildings being the most sustainable.

Designed and developed in consultation with Low Hammond Rowe Architects and CitySpaces Consulting, Vergo affordable townhouses is an 18-unit complex comprised of one, two, and three-bedroom townhouses that provide rental housing for families of moderate income. The complex was constructed as part of the redevelopment of the former Mount View School site.

The buildings are designed with upgraded insulation and windows, natural light, energy efficient appliances and light fixtures, low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint and floor coverings, and natural landscaping. LEED Platinum buildings deliver the lowest energy and water consumption, provide a greater return on investment, and demonstrate a shorter payback period for their investment.

“The CRD is a signatory of the BC Climate Action Charter and is working towards reducing GHG emission from our own corporate operations, as well as supporting and accelerating climate action across the Region,” said David Screech, CRHC Board Chair. “The LEED Platinum rating is the highest rating possible within the LEED green building standard, and achieving the Platinum designation on this project is a critical step towards meeting the CRD’s climate action commitments.”

LEED is a rating system that is recognized as the international mark of excellence for green building in 150 countries. Since 2002, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and LEED Canada have been redefining the buildings and communities where Canadians live, work and learn.

LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC) is a non-profit provider of over 1200 affordable rental units in the capital region of Victoria, BC. The Corporation is owned by the Capital Regional District, and is governed by a Board of Directors which includes members of the community and directors from the Capital Regional District Board.
