Victoria, BC– Tomorrow marks the beginning of the Capital Regional District (CRD) Fats Oils and Grease (FOG) Slogan Master Challenge. Prizes will be awarded to residents who come up with catchy slogans that help to spread the word about how to properly dispose of leftover fats, oils and grease through composting or recycling.
“Many people don’t know that putting fats, oils and grease down the drain is bad for the environment, bad for the regional sewer system and bad for individual septic systems,“ said Nils Jensen, Chair of the Environmental Services Committee. “With the right information, it is simple to properly dispose of FOG and we want to show residents how practicing good disposal habits can help save them money and protect our environment at the same time.”
FOG that is flushed down drains can clog pipes and treatment screens, causing backups, overflows and odour problems.
The Slogan Master Challenge runs from November 15 to December 12, during which time there will be four weekly prize draws. One winner will be chosen at random each week to receive a gift certificate to a local eatery (value estimated at $25).
From the slogans received throughout the entire campaign, one winner will be selected by a panel of judges. The grand prize winner will receive a gift certificate to Big Wheel Burger, valued at $75, and their winning slogan could be printed on T-shirts and displayed on outreach materials at future community events.
