Salt Spring Island, BC– On Thursday, May 1 the Capital Regional District (CRD) Salt Spring Island Area staff released the survey results about the Saturday Market in Centennial Park. The impetus for the survey was in response to more than 600 petitions for increasing vendor opportunities. However; due to space limitations at the market, CRD Director Wayne McIntyre worked with staff to undertake the work in evaluating the Saturday Market in Centennial Park experience from several community stakeholders groups: visitors, the market vendors, the downtown Ganges business owners, and Salt Spring Island residents.
The report, based on survey results, outlines how opinions and perspectives compare between the community-stakeholders. “This information will help us better understand the community’s experiences and their ideas on how to improve the Saturday market, “explains CRD Director Wayne McIntyre.
The survey report identified key themes for future consideration and planning including: parking at the market, expansion of the physical space of the market, and market organization and practices. CRD staff will be evaluating various ideas in the survey with a view to implementing some on a priority basis subject to budget and operational feasibility.
“The Saturday Market in the Park is a critical economic driver for the island as well as a social hub for the community,” said Director Wayne McIntyre. “Each year the market brings over 100,000 visitors to Salt Spring Island and we need to ensure we are building upon these successes in order to continue to enhance our community and the region.”
The CRD is a local government that delivers 200+ regional, sub-regional and local services for residents of the region which includes 13 municipalities and three electoral areas within 2370 square kilometres on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.
